The Daytona Laser font is one of the FreeWare offerings from OLDUVAI. It may be distributed freely as long as it is not altered and this document accompanies it. Copyright 1988 OLDUVAI Corporation 7520 Read Road, Suite A South Miami, FL 33143 1-800-822-0772 (305) 665-4665 Fax (305) 665-0671 December 23, 1988 Introduction Thank you for trying out the Daytona Laser font. We are proud to offer you this FREE typeface and hope that you put it to productive use. Although Daytona is a different font altogether, it will give you a flavor of OLDUVAI's ART-FONTS, the series of commercial display type- faces that offers designers, artists, and desktop publishers, like yourself, striking new typefaces at an extremely low cost ($99 retail price per volume). ART-FONTS: high quality, decorative Laser fonts give your document or publication a striking new look for headlines and logos. The entire ART-FONTS collection includes three volumes of six (6) Laser fonts each, to be used with the Apple LaserWriter and other PostScript printers. While the host of PostScript typefaces available are intended for ordinary correspondence, ART-FONTS are display typefaces that clearly turn heads and make people pause, rather than being "smooth and easy to read." While we are sure we have not thought of all the places where ART-FONTS may be used, they easily find a home in glaring head- lines and stunning logos. Take a look at some recent OLDUVAI litera- ture; youÕll notice that ART-FONTS are there. WeÕve also introduced PictureKeys, clip art that is built into a font. PictureKeys images range from straightforward arrows to a Macintosh computer. Each volume of ART-FONTS contains a unique PictureKeys font. With PictureKeys, you have a wide range of instant clip art images at your fingertips. We never intended for the ART-FONTS typefaces to be "static." While you can, of course, simply use these typefaces (just by typing), these typefaces work spectacularly well when creatively manipulated. Installation Follow these steps for a quick installation of the Daytona font: NOTE: To properly use Daytona, you should be using Apple's System/Finder 4.1/5.5 or later, with LaserWriter driver 4.0, or later. Daytona works best with System 6.0.2 (or later,) which uses LaserWriter driver 5.2. Earlier versions of the LaserWriter driver did not automatically down- load fonts to printers. See your dealer about upgrading to newer vers- ions of AppleÕs System/Finder. Some font downloading applications allow Daytona to be used with earlier systems. It is required that you use the latest Font/DA Mover (3.8 or later) from Apple's System Utilities I disk. 1) Copy the Daytona printer font into your active System Folder. 2) Use Font/DA Mover to install the Daytona screen font(s) into your System file. You may also use temporary installers to use the screen fonts. Once you're done, you should be up and creatively using the Daytona font in a matter of minutes. Using Daytona Daytona has been tested compatible with hundreds of Macintosh programs. We have found a certain number of these extremely useful in our own use of Daytona. These programs can best be separated into three categories: System Enhancers, Type Enhancers, and Publishing/Presentation packages. There are many utilities products that make life with the Macintosh fonts easier. A few quickly come to mind, all building on inherent problems with the Macintosh. Some of these may help you in your day to day life. Often your System Folder may get crowded with a large number of printer fonts. Utilities such as OLDUVAI's FontShare allow you to keep printer fonts in other places besides the large System Folder. If running on a network, FontShare allows you to place all downloadable typefaces on a single file server, clearing valuable space from each workstation. When it comes time to print, FontShare automatically downloads the typeface to the PostScript printer. While Apple recommends following the lengthy Font/DA Mover screen font installation process, sometimes it may be easier to quickly and tempor- arily install screen fonts. A number of these utilities are available on the market. A number of public domain font downloading applications exist. These utilities allow you to explicitly download PostScript documents, includ- ing typefaces, to printers. This may prove to be an alternative to plac- ing Printer fonts in the System Folder for automatic downloading. These font downloaders allow you to permanently (until you turn the printer off) keep the font definition in the printer so that when a print job requires that typeface it does not have to be downloaded at the time of printing. Apple, for example, supplies the LaserWriter Font Utility. This application, while not in the public domain, is one of the best available. You may also find other utilities available through most user group libraries and telecommunication services. A relatively new category of utilities for downloadable typefaces are type enhancers. Type enhancers allow PostScript typefaces to be manipu- lated for very creative and sometimes unusual effects. The manipulations these packages include provide abilities such as rotation, stretching of text, and other transformations too numerous to mention here. A product such as Broderbund's TypeStyler is strictly a type enhancer, while appli- cations such as Adobe Illustrator '88, Freehand and Cricket Draw contain features that provide simple manipulations. All of these applications are recommended. Desktop publishing applications that provide the ability to easily create complex pages for publications are numerous, but the most popular include Aldus' PageMaker, Quark's XPress, and Letraset's Ready-Set-Go! Desktop presentations products are a new entry to Macintosh applications. Presentation products such as Symantec's MORE II, Microsoft's PowerPoint, Cricket Presents, Aldus' Persuasion, and Letraset's StandOut provide you with tools that make the creation of slides and handouts very easy. If you are using ART-FONTS and intend to produce presentations, we suggest that you look into these products. Troubleshooting Symptom: I am using Daytona, and the page that comes out of the LaserWriter is com- posed of a ragged series of dots or Daytona doesn't print, but another "standard" typeface (usually Courier or Helvetica) does. Possible Causes: The Printer font is not available to the printer. In order for a PostScript printer to print the proper font, it must have the printer font containing the outline definition available. Additionally, the Font Substitution op- tion, found in the applications Page Setup dialog, may be set incorrectly. Solutions: a) Copy the Daytona Printer font into your active System Folder. b) If you are using an earlier Apple System/Finder than version 4.1/5.5, which uses LaserWriter driver version 4.0, or later, you must either up- grade to a newer System or use a font downloading application. Daytona work best with System 6.0.2 (or later,) which uses LaserWriter driver 5.2. Other OLDUVAI Products READ-IT! O.C.R. 2.0 (for any scanner) - Software-only O.C.R. for any scanner. Stop typing!
